Nokia came up with its own app in reply to the popular Blackberry & iPhone Apps for Social Networking - in particular Facebook and Twitter. What came as a much awaited and promising feature in the end turned out to be a half hearted attempt with not much worth. The app can be downloaded from the Nokia Messaging site.
I have been using this app on Nokia E63, so all observations and inferences are based on the performance of this app on this phone. To start with, the app binds Twitter and Facebook but in a way that only one can be used at a time and you need to close one if you wish to use the other. The question that arises is - why not simply two separate applications for them?? One may still overlook this flaw but where Nokia Communities terribly looses out is its speed. It has a dismal performance by any standards! After you make the initial selection between Twitter or Facebook, it takes forever to load your updates. You need to be an extremely patient person if you still wish to persist with this app after one or two uses. Its not just the updates loading, every function just takes unbelievably long to happen! Try posting a tweet or update and you find it is a considerable wait - specially as the updates are refreshed after each post you make. If you happen to loose your patience in the middle of it and try selecting the "Close" option, dont bother as it is no faster.
What Nokia Communities does provide is the basic functions of Twitter and Facebook - at least for namesake. If you wish to use high ended features such as accessing or posting notes on Facebook, etc - please accept their apologies. Twitter is also present in the same basic form - no question of responding to follower requests, searching friends or anything of that sort.
Oh yes - another aspect is the data usage - the app consumes considerably more data than competing products from other vendors. It also does use up your battery much faster.
After more than two months of using Nokia Communities, it would be only appropriate to sum it up as an app that has a mind of its own and refuses to listen to you in any manner. Most of the time you end up being relieved to have been able to close it for the better! With the Social Networking fad all around these days, one wonders why Nokia cannot come up with a proper usable product - that when even the most basic of phones from relatively unknown brands are offering excellent solutions for it these days! There surely are excellent alternates from other sources for both Twitter and Facebook about which I would be writing in the subsequent posts, so do watch out!
